Brazil: A rising potential for student mobility
Brazilian universities are among the top of Latin America’s universities, (Universidade de São Paulo, USP, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, UNICAMP) with high quality research. 16,467,162 Brazilians were of age to enroll in higher education institutions (HEI) in 2020. Brazilians in international mobility increased to 77% from 2015 to 2020, compared to 32% in the world.
In 2020, 89,151 Brazilian students studied abroad, which represents an increase of 163% since 2010 (33,823). 1.4% of Brazilian students are mobile as of 2020.
The number of students in Brazilian universities almost doubled within ten years, and at the same time, the number of mobile students was multiplied by three, showing an important potential for the development of international mobility towards Europe. According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), five of the top 10 destinations for outgoing mobile students from Brazil in 2020 were located in Europe: Portugal (No.3), followed by Germany (No.6), France (No.7), Spain (No.8), Italy (No.10).
