The Moldovan education system and demographics

Moldova’s education system is relatively small but plays a central role in the country’s cultural, social, and economic development. Higher education, in particular, serves as a promoter of human rights, sustainable development, democracy, peace, and justice.

The higher education sector includes around 16 public and private universities, along with colleges and vocational institutions, serving roughly 60,000–70,000 students nationwide. Each year, thousands of young people complete upper secondary education, forming a limited but highly motivated pool of higher education candidates. In 2024, 8,900 graduates obtained a Bachelor’s diploma and 4,500 a Master’s diploma, or its equivalent.

Moldova’s higher education system is structured around the three-cycle framework of the Bologna Process: Bachelor’s (typically three to four years), Master’s (one to two years), and Doctoral studies. Universities offer programs across disciplines including sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, medicine, and arts, though the range of specialized programs remains narrower than in larger countries.

While admission to most domestic universities is generally less competitive than in larger nations, constrained financial resources, limited program diversity, and modest international recognition encourage many students to seek study opportunities abroad. Efforts to modernize curricula, improve research capacities, and expand international collaboration are ongoing, with the aim of enhancing both the quality and global visibility of Moldovan higher education.

The government also promotes vocational and technical education as a means to address labor market needs, providing alternative pathways for students whose interests or circumstances make university study less suitable. Despite challenges, education remains a central pillar in Moldova’s strategy for human capital development and societal progress.

What studying abroad means for Moldovan students

For Moldovan students, studying abroad is not just about earning a degree — it is an opportunity to access broader educational resources, gain international experience, develop valuable skills and professional networks, and improve overall employability. It often serves as a stepping stone to global career opportunities and, in some cases, longer-term residence — particularly within the European Union, where academic mobility is closely linked to broader labor mobility.

Close cultural and linguistic ties to Romania, increasing alignment with European education standards, and aspirations for better career prospects contribute to Moldovan students being an active, highly motivated, and increasingly internationally minded group within global student mobility. Exposure to diverse academic environments abroad also helps them bring new perspectives and innovations back to Moldova, benefiting both their personal development and the country’s human capital.

Other events in the same timeframe: Contact-Building Seminar - 5 May 2026

This one-day hybrid event supports the development of new partnerships between higher education institutions from Erasmus+ programme countries and from Moldova and other Neighborhood East countries, particularly through Erasmus+ actions including International Credit Mobility (ICM), Erasmus Mundus (EM), and Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE). The event will include plenary sessions, followed by bilateral matchmaking sessions.

The event is aimed primarily at higher education institutions’ representatives, specifically for staff from international relations offices, and academic or teaching staff who have an institutional mandate to explore international partnerships. Interested National Agencies are also invited to submit an Expression of Interest.
